Jim Jordan Loses First Ballot For Speakership, Receives Fewer Votes Than Hakeem Jeffries
On the first ballot to elect a Speaker of the House since the ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Jim Jordan has been defeated leaving the House without a Speaker.
The divided Republican chaos caucus in the House was unable to come together behind Jordan who only received 200 votes 17 shy of the 217 needed to win. Republicans not voting for Jordan gave their support to Kevin McCarthy, who received six votes, Steve Scalise, who received seven votes, and other Republicans like Lee Zeldin as well as Mike Garcia also received non-Jordan GOP votes
Unlike House Republicans, House Democrats have stayed united behind their leader, Hakeem Jeffries. Hakeem Jeffries received all 212 Democratic votes, twelve votes more than Jordan.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has proposed traditional Republicans could break with the extremists within the House Republican Conference and partner with Democrats on a bipartisan path forward to end the chaos in the House if Republicans continue to prove unable to elect a Speaker.
Speaker Hakeem Jeffries sounds really good to us
